Don’t know wtf im doing

Am going to uni for a foundation year and then wanted to go to Leeds art uni for the actual BA. No clue what I’m doing at all, no clue what I should be doing or what I want to do. Passed college with 3xD* for art, so it felt right to do concept art, and LAU was such a lovely place from the first impression. Though, from outside voices about how worthless and useless an art degree is, I’ve got no clue about my future, but art is f*cking awesome.

My current perception of work is very poor and lacks knowledge about the actual working world, and its possibilities. Especially the commercial/entertainment art world. So my head is full of extremely defeatist narratives, instead of opportunities, experiences and living.

Anyone with an art degree, honestly, where are you now? Are you still alive and surviving, wherever you have landed 😭

I think you need to stop and take stock. By the sounds of it you are about to flush a very valuable opportunity down the drain through pure ignorance.

If you don't know what to do at university, don't go until you do know what you want to do. You only get one funded shot at university and if you get it wrong undoing it is prohibitively expensive. Why not get yourself a job (anything) and spend a bit of time in the real world. Go travelling. Build mud huts in Africa, sail around the world. Whatever you fancy. By doing this, you will discover a bit more about yourself and what you like. That will then inform what you want to do and that will inform any degree you need to take.

But please please please - don't go to university because you feel that is where you have to go and all your friends are going anyway. That is just about the worst choice you could make.

Good luck!

Thought over it and that’s basically my plan now. Thanks!

Good for you. Good luck!
Worst comes to worst, there's always the option of the armed forces! (Not that that's a bad career!)

Hey,

My advice would be, really dig deep and do your research, look at the different art related jobs available and what qualifications you would need. Speak to past students and current course lecturers (you could go to an open day with no obligation to go to those universities). I would also recommend trying to get a job so you can understand the working world, and volunteering in a few places within the art world to see if you actually like the industry. Spend some time to really decide what you would like to do, Its better to spend some time and figure out exactly what you would like to do, than rushing into a degree and then find out it wasn't for you. There will probably be some blogs out there of art students, might also be worth creating a thread with the title relating to whether people think it was worth doing their art degree, you might find more specific advice.

Good luck with everything!

I'm a bit late to this, sorry, but imo go for it. I'm about to start at leeds art uni as well and I struggled for a long time with the same sorts of thoughts. I've now decided that I'm going to be training as an engineer alongside my degree and that my art degree is purely for my own personal fulfilment and to hone this skill that I love dearly and that is a deep part of who I am as a person. whatever your future ends up being your passion for art will stay and imo doing a degree like this is likely to be hugely significant to your development both as an artist and as a person. if you career ends up being art related? cool, awesome! there are plenty of ways you can make that work. if it doesn't? awesome as well, having a degree on your CV looks great and in terms of personal life fulfilment i bet getting to work on your art in a specialist environment at a great art uni will be something you'll be grateful for. just my thoughts though

Tysm for commenting! Yeah, I totally understand, personal fulfilment is a huge motive. It would be a huge regret in the future, and yes, degrees are good for the CV ahah. + Congrats on Leeds! I hope you have a fantastic time there  good luck
