Anglia Ruskin University is a new university, which gained university status in 1992. It has two campuses, Chelmsford and Cambridge. Additionally, ARU is home to one of the most innovative degrees and projects in Great Britain - Ultralab and Ultraversity.

Facilities

Courses

Anglia Ruskin offers a range of different subjects in both locations, Chelmsford and Cambridge. For more detailed information, check their web page or their prospectus. Anglia Ruskin provides undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as short courses, foundation degrees and professional courses.

Ultraversity, their distance learning department, offers a distance learning course that is one-of-a-kind in the UK at the moment: a course conducted entirely online. It leads to a BA (Hons) in Learning, Technology and Research and is fully accredited by Anglia Ruskin University.

Libraries

Great digital library with access from all over the world. Can access a very wide range of excellent professional databases. Large library (three floors) with good books, but often these get stolen or hidden, and are not always up to date. Great inter-library loan service with British Library London for £1 per item. Library open until midnight seven days a week.

IT and Computing

There are a large number of computers in library, very good software.

Sports

Chelmsford: American Football, basketball, cheerleading, netball, rock climbing and skiing.

Welfare

Healthcare

There is an on-campus nurse and pharmacy.

Shops

Two large shopping malls with all big name stores, and four Tescos within Chelmsford (including a Tesco Home and a Tesco Express). Great market, which sells cheap but good fashionable clothes, good bag stall, cards/gifts, fabrics and fruit/veg/sweets. Second hand / antique market on Thursdays.

Restaurants

Papa Johns (pizza), a small dodgy Indian restaurant and Chinese joint on campus. Off campus, Chelmsford has an exellent range of restaurants. For something special, try La Tasca, Gerrado's, or Waterfront. For a posh 50s diner try Stagecoach. Duke Street around the corner from uni has all kinds of Italian, Indian, chippies etc. of a reasonable price for the student wallet. Popular all you can eat buffets within 5 minutes walk from uni include Gulsham Curry at £6 and Imperial Chinese at £4.50. There is also a Pizza Hut and Pizza Express, and the regular Costa coffee, Caffè Nero, a couple of Thai restarants, McDonald's and Burger King.

Banks

HSBC on site. Barclays, Lloyds TSB, and Halifax are within a 10 minute walk away.

Transport

Careers service

Quite good for part time work and middle to lower tier local firms, excellent local contacts. Law and Business students are almost guaranteed that if they want a local job, the careers service will have contacts with a firm they could work for. However if you want a big job in London, they are not so helpful due to lack of experience of graduates going there.

Part-time jobs

Religous facilities

Islamic services and society. Active Christian Union, with regular masses held on campus. Chaplaincy on campus.

Social

Bars, Pubs and clubs

Chelmsford students will definitely find themselves going to Dukes nightclub on a regular basis. it is about 10 minutes from the uni, and has two large rooms - the main part plays mainly pop and dance and chart stuff, with lava lamps and 80s style podium dancers. The other posh bit, Decadence, looks kind of dodgy with leather sofas and dim red lights but the music is always great R n B, hip hop, some great DJs.

Chelmsford also has Zeus nightclub, mainly aimed at teens and schoolkids, and Reds - for old people.

Chelmsford has some great bars in the centre of town, all in close proximity. Lloyds (now called Thomas Mildmay or something) - sticky floor, overpriced drinks but very nice on the top floor with glass walls overlooking the River Chelmer, nicely lit up, and a balcony to dance on. Toads (now renamed Que Pasa) pretty popular with students, but now they renamed it, everything is covered in leopard print and they put up some pole dancing poles. Nice small place for a drink and dance before hitting Dukes. Also serves nice lunches. Yates wine bar is also nearby but usually full of old people. Yates, Toads and Lloyds are right next to each other. Great for a drunken night.

Pubs for a good chat and few beers are the local Wetherspoons/Ivory Peg, which sells cheap drinks, The Fleece - popular with Law students for some reason, and a nice small pub called the Wheatsheaf, which is tiny and right near the uni. Not many students go there, but it is really nice inside. Better for a quiet drink, as is the Railway Tavern, usually full of old folks but nice with round windows like sitting on an old train. You might also get dragged to the Queen Bee pub or the Fox and Raven for their delicious, massive lunches. There is also the Hot House, famous for Strawberry Beer, Aero/Chilli/Skittles/Chocolate/all kinds of weird flavoured Vodka shots.

Events

Clubs and Societies

Chelmsford is very poor for clubs and societies as most students live off of campus so only travel in for lectures and dont hang around. There are the sports clubs (see below), a Law Society which is not very active, a Christian Union which tends to be very very small - about 4-8 people, and a rock music society which only runs dependant on numbers, and a Raise and Give society. The freshers' fair is usually very busy, but often you may join clubs paying membership only to never hear from them again. Clubs tend to be very small and don't hold many events due to low numbers.

Accommodation

Accommodation policy

In Chelmsford, there is an oversupply of university accommodation and students can often spend more than one year in the student village.

In Cambridge, there is a serious shortage of University managed housing. Very few students are accommodated for more than one year, while applicants with a home address within 25 miles of Cambridge are ineligible for accommodation. Demand for the two on-campus halls is very high and late applicants may find themselves in managed houses or referred to private sector accommodation.

The student accomodation is about £70-80 per week but on campus, the flats are very small and cramped in general. Literally you stand up from the bed and you are at the desk, at least in Chelmsford. Weird grey and white colour scheme, much like a prison.

However in the local area, Chelmsford has lots of nice Victorian style homes for rent. Some are even £50 pw excl. bills. Nice place to live full of old people with small dogs, friendly atmosphere and everything within walking distance. Very low crime rate, very safe except for Westlands and Melbourne areas, which are slightly less so due to high numbers of council flats and being out of town - these areas are not dangerous but they are just places to be wary in. The uni is about two minutes from the police station.

Ultraversity

Ultraversity is part of Anglia Ruskin University. It belongs to Ultralab, a department of the university specialising on online education.

They offer one degree at the moment, the BA (Hons) Learning, Technology and Research. It is only offered online, based on people's work and their experiences at work (parenting counts as well).

The degree is considered a part-time course with full-time intensity (important for funding issues). Funding is available for UK and EU students through student finance direct.

The fees for one year are £1200 (at the moment, the university reserves the right to change the fees) for UK and EU students. Funding is available for up £1125 for EU students and £1375 for UK students. Fees differ for students outside the UK.
