Edge Hill University is located across several campuses, but is mainly concentrated on a main campus in Ormskirk, Lancashire. At the other campuses (which include places in Aintree, Chorley, Liverpool, Manchester, Shrewsbury, Winsford and the Wirral) the courses tend to be mostly part time or professional development courses. Some health-subject courses are also situated at these other sites. But most students at Edge Hill will have their studies based on the main Ormskirk Campus. FacilitiesLearning ResourcesThis covers the libraries and the computing provision and the related services. There is the main Learning Resource Centre on the Ormskirk Campus with about a quarter of a million items and over 150 networked PCs for student use. There are also over 500 quiet study spaces and you can book group study spaces (online). The centre also has scanners and printers which you can use. Also at Ormskirk is the Learning Innovation Centre. It has over 200 PCs for student use and has loads of TV and radio productions facilities. Both the Aintree and the Chorley campuses also have library and computing provision for the courses run at those locations. SportsEdge Hill has the 'Sporting Edge' sports complex on the main campus. It has an amazing array of facilities, both indoor and outdoor. These include 4 sports hall, large fitness suite (with 40 stations), sprung floor gym, sprung floor dance studio, a squash court, 6 lane athletics track, 18 metre swimming pool, tennis courts, netball courts, several grass pitches and 2 AstroTurf pitches. During the week there is a very busy schedule of classes held at the centre ranging from Yoga to Urban Funk street dancing. Though if you want to get involved with sports clubs and teams the SU has a number running each year. These include:
WelfareThe counseling service offers a place where you can talk about your personal problems and discover solutions. It's usually totally confidential too, though like all counselling services they have a duty to act to protect you and others and to follow the law. In addition the uni has teams to help with financial issues, general welfare issues, students who need childcare provision and give support to disabled students.
HealthcareThere is a health centre in the The Wilson Centre. It's open 5 days a week with a nurses available every day and a GP surgery held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. You're advised to register with the doctors there if you come from outside the area so you have easy access to medical help when you need it. In addition to general medical help when sick you can get loads of info from the health centre, including sexual health, healthy eating and drugs awareness. There is a contraception advice clinic held each week. ShopsThe University shop has a range of food and drink items, stationery, etc. There's a small branch of Blackwell's bookshop in the Library, where you can order textbooks. BanksThere's a cashpoint on campus TransportOrmskirk can be reached from by using trains from Liverpool to Ormskirk on the Northern Line, or on Northern Rail services from Preston. The trains to Ormskirk run every fifteen minutes throughout the day from Liverpool Central and Moorfields on the northern line and at quiter times down to every half an hour. This service is very reliable and only takes 30minutes from Liverpool City Centre. There are many buses that go to Ormskirk from Liverpool, Southport, Wigan, Skelmersdale so it is very accessible. There is also the edge link bus which runs from the bus station to the campus and back every fifteen minutes, there is a small cost of 50p each way or free bus passes are avaliable. Careers serviceThe careers service will give you help with careers choices, in applying for jobs and in preparation for interviews. Each year they organise a careers fair as well as visits and talks from many major employers. The help you can get can show you how to make the most of your time at Edge Hill, how to gain experience, how to make the most of your summers and how to get that edge over other candidates. You can also find out all about volunteering too. If you're doing teacher training they will also offer a lot of specialised advice for finding your first teaching post. Part-time jobsThe careers service have the 'Job Zone' which will help you apply for jobs. This includes part time jobs whilst you study. More specifically, the 'Job Club' will help you find part time work during the term or something for the holidays too. They have jobs advertised on their online board. They also offer you basic info on working (like conditions, minimum wage etc) and provide a list of other job sites you might find useful. Though most students will be able to juggle the needs of working with their studies, PGCE and many undergraduate educations students who have lengthy teaching places will not be able to fit any part time work in with their course. Religious facilitiesThere is a Christian Union. SocialBars, Pubs and clubsOrmskirk is perhaps not the clubbing capital of the North, but you make the most of what you have. There is a decent choice of pubs and clubs in town, but many students will regularly make a trip to other places - Southport not being too far away or if you want somewhere bigger and much more lively, Liverpool and even Manchester are within reach. EventsThere are loads of little events held during the year but the two big ones are the annual Christmas Ball and the annual Grad Ball. These are both big occasions and to celebrate this they are usually held in Blackpool.
Clubs and societiesAs it is a campus university and is still in the process of expanding, Edge Hill currently only offers a small range of societies and clubs, most of which are sports based. Here is just a list of some of the sports societies at Edge Hill University:
If you are not into sports there are some other societies to join. However, most of these are religion based such as the Christian Union. Edge Hill SU are proposing for a wide range of societies to be set up in the near future. AccommodationThe uni has 678 rooms on campus for students. The rooms are all reserved for first years, though demand is much higher than places available so there's no guarantee you'll get a place. The accommodation is a good mix though with some catering and some self-catering. Accommodation policyWhile they do not guarantee you accommodation even if you apply, you should maximise your chances by applying as soon as you get the form. Also, you'll have a better chance if your home address is more than 15 miles from the uni. The bad thing is that you will not find out if you have a uni place until after results day, which could mean you only have a few weeks to find a private house/room before term starts. FacilitiesAll rooms have access to kitchen facilities and there is a great feature of free wireless internet in all halls. No bed linen nor cooking/eating untiles are provided. Private sectorIf you don't get a place in your first year in uni accommodation and for subsequent years you'll need to rent a room privately. Don't worry as there are loads to choose from and the uni will offer guidance. They will even help put you in touch with other first years who didn't get accommodation too. You may decide you don't want to or can't find a place in Ormskirk itself and may have to look elsewhere. The towns of Southport, Wigan and St Helens are popular with Students and with Liverpool only a train ride away some people choose to take advantage of the huge amount of student housing there along with the city-living lifestyle. Student unionThe SU building houses the SU shop where you can get basic snacks and food as well as textbooks. It also has the Diner which serves fast food and the launderette. Also in there is the on campus bar 'The Venue' which is home to most of the weekly events from quizzes and live bands to pool tournaments and live sports. There are also regular themed disco nights which are popular. PricesEnvironmentArchitectureThe main campus is quite nice and has a mix of 1930s buildings and modern architecture. The university has spent £60 million in the last ten years on new buildings. The new £14 million Health building opened in 2007. Local areaOrmskirk is located in Lancashire and is perfectly set for access to some very diverse landscapes. The coast is near by with some huge sandy beaches. Then you have the traditional British Seaside resorts of Southport and Blackpool within easy reach. Slightly further away you have the large cities of Liverpool and Manchester. Both are always well worth a visit and are steeped in history, the former being the European Capital of Culture 2008. If you prefer unspoilt countryside you;'ll get that too. The Pennines are only a short journey away and two national parks - the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are great places for a day out. Teaching qualityThe uni got 4 out of 5 in the 2006 National Student Survey. Ofsted has rated the initial teacher training courses the top possible score of 1 while the courses on nursing, midwifery and healthcare subjects have been commended in recent years. Entry requirements are pretty standard, being about 200-280 UCAS points. Applying to Edge HillThinking of applying to Edge Hill University?
