Location and History

James College is located in the South of the main campus next to the sports centre and Goodricke College. It is named after Lord James, the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. The current Provost is Ken Todd who also lectures in electronics.

James College was built in approximately 1989 and was originally intended to be postgraduate accommodation. In 1993/4 blocks DE and F were built and James then became the 7th Undergraduate college.

Departments

Unlike most colleges James College does not house an academic department. The department of Psychology is however in the grounds of James College.

Accommodation

Blocks A, B and C are standard rooms while D-M are en-suite. Blocks A-F are houses over 3 floors with 16 people to a kitchen. Blocks G-M are flats with 8 people to a kitchen (with the exception of G1 which only has 4). It is rumoured that blocks D, E and F were built to 4* hotel standards for the conference guests who use the rooms during the Easter and Summer vacations.

Social Spaces

Gardens

James college is made up of Quads with blocks surrounding a central grassy area. The DEF quad is where the biggest James College event, Quad Dash, is held every year. These areas are popular during the summer term.

Dining room

There is no dining room in James College however the Roger Kirk centre is as close to James as it is to Goodricke and this serves excellent food and sandwiches.

Bar

James College is the only university college to not have a bar. Some see this as the downfall of James College however Goodricke and Wentworth bar are very close and it in fact just adds variety.

JCR

The JCR is located besides A and C block overlooking Wentworth and the lake. It has a key-card entry system so only 1st years can enter easily. Inside is a TV with non-subscription Sky and comfy chairs.

Study rooms, lecture theaters and Computing

James College does not have any study rooms, lecture theatres or computer suites. The nearest study rooms and computer suites are in Goodricke and Wentworth college. Goodricke colleges facilities are open 24 hours a day. Most lectures are held in Physics which is just 2 minutes from James College.
