Personal Statement:Computer Science with Business 1
From The Student RoomTSR Wiki > University > Applying to University > Personal Statement Library > Computer Science with Business 1 After developing an interest of web design at a young age, I began to view computers with a more scientific mind, developing a keen interest in the programming of computers. This interest has increased over the years and I want to enhance my understanding of the scientific ways in which computers function. I have realised that my interest in computer programming can only be put to justice by studying a Computer Science related course, as I want to develop and enhance my basic knowledge which will enable me of following an appealing and interesting career path in Industry. Acknowledging the fact that Maths is a key part to Computer Science, I have not been discouraged by the fact that I chose not to take AS Maths. My Business Studies course keeps my Maths skills sharp and I also have a close relationship with the school's Maths department, which have given me material that allows me to keep my Maths skills up to a high standard in order to be prepared for the Mathematical aspects of the course. I am an incredibly driven and focused person and this is not only reflected in my studies but also the extra curricular work I have done along side my school. In 2006, I was in the Young Consumer Team. We represented Wales and were 4 of the 42 people who had beaten over 25,000 students to get to that stage. Despite studying 4 AS Levels, a part time Job and tutoring children, I used my time management skills to ensure my knowledge was up to a high standard, and my communication and teamwork capabilities excelled. I have also participated in many Business Challenges. In 2006, I captained a team of 4 in the University of Newport Business Challenge. As captain, I delegated and organised the team and ensured we all communicated and were working towards the same goal. We were awarded first place, our hard work and determination paid off as we beat many other schools in the county. I was also a member of the Young Enterprise winning team in 2005. The above events have taught me how to communicate in a team, making me a dynamic team member and have made me aware of the importance of team work in all situations. I have had the privilege of spending a weeks work experience in the IT department of the major multinational GlaxoSmithKline. There I saw the dependence and importance of the computer systems in place, and saw the relevance of teamwork, communication and also the technical skills which I intend to learn. I was asked to come back in the Summer but could not do so due to other commitments. I am also a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, where I had the responsibility of teaching classes. Despite 7 years of dedication and determination, I had to stop attending regularly due to study commitments and injury. This year I have been given the position of Deputy Head Girl. I was elected to this position by my peers and the staff of the school. This not only proved a confidence boost but has made me responsible for a variety of events and tasks. I have helped on open days and last year, every Tuesday and Thursday I mentored a Year 8 pupil with their reading. and I am also a founding member of the school's Debating Society, showing how I am an active member within the school. I have also held a part time job in a restaurant for 3 years. Working there has been invaluable as it has increased my work ethic and how I can adapt and respond in many situations. This has led me to be a very hardworking individual and I love the challenge which my job presents. I am hoping that my passion for computers and my skills which I have acquired through school, work and the outside world will make me a successful adult in the future, and my future is hopefully, in the Computing world.
