Medicine Personal Statement

The main reason I have chosen to study medicine is because there are many people in this world who suffer from terrible and unfortunate diseases and illnesses, of which Science has no control over. By studying this course I am hoping to produce new and effective methods to ease or cure suffering and some of these fatal diseases

My work experience was a valuable insight into my choice of degree

For the last 3 months, during summer 2002, I volunteered at the Central Middlesex Hospital. From this experience I gained general knowledge about caring for patients. I carried out the job of looking after the day to day welfare of the patients and to ensure that they were satisfied. I was also showed how to act under different situations. I intend to continue this for as long as possible. I have observed that having a career in medicine requires patience, dedication, responsibility commitment, hard work, physical and emotional stamina and most importantly communication skills. My optimistic and positive attitudes towards life and experiences have consolidated my ambition to study Medicine

In the past 2 years I have regularly taken part in several fundraising activities. Last February I volunteered to raise money for a temple to be built, which was a rewarding opportunity to help others within the community by taking part in a charity run. Taking part in this fundraiser has strengthened my self-motivation and confidence, as well as improving my team work and communication skills. I have also taken part in the St. Vincent De Paul programme, where I had to go to a local primary school and conduct after school activities with them. I find working with children a very enjoyable and interesting experience

In February 2002, I started working at ICT Eurotell. This is a European based insurance company which has contracts with Lloyds TSB, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and Barclaycard. One of the several tasks included communicating with customers who were at times irate and extremely rude in such scenarios I had to provide assurance to the customer and also maintaining a calm tone of voice

I have many interests and hobbies ranging from playing sports such as football and cricket to listening to music. Since the age of seven I have been involved in many social activities. During my secondary education years (yrs 10 and 11) I regularly participated in extra curricular activities and had several responsibilities. At high school I was captain of the school football team and a 1st team member of the cricket team which won several cups and trophies. I also enjoy listening to new age music, which I find very relaxing

I am looking forward to building on my existing experiences of studying Medicine and the chance to further my knowledge in this field.
