  • Not overly impressive knowledge – many geographical books came to aid literary understanding.


  • Map most important for officials to conceptualise land on their borders etc. Theodosius II orders map of the world.


  • Isaac says did not have “sufficiently clear or accurate notion of topographical realities to allow them to conceive overall military situation” - Roman surveyors could survey extensive tracts of provincial territory – why not large-scale geographical territory?


  • Janni avoides habitual map literacy – lacked spatial awareness to map it accurately
