Wessex Lane

Connaught

Room Types available: Catered. Basic and Standard + Washbasin.

No of Rooms: 289

No of people sharing a kitchen: around 15 (in old quad)

No of people sharing a toilet: around 15 (in old quad) and usually two toilets per block

No of people sharing a shower/bath: around 15, and usually 2 showers and 1 bath per block

Connaught is part of the Wessex Lane complex; it is a 15 minute walk from Highfield (uni campus). It has regular buses linking it to Highfield (5 mins) Portswood (10/15 mins) the hospital (20 mins) and the City (30 mins).

It is part catered halls, meaning once a day you get breckfast and dinner.

In Old Quad you share a two floored block (more like a house) with 14 other people. You have two toilets and a bathroom with six sinks, two showers and one bath in it. The kitchens are very small but all have a fridge, oven, grill and microwave (some have a freezer). The bedrooms in Old Quad are huge, but with no washbasin.

In New Quad it a more traditional corridor layout with less people in it. The rooms are smaller with a washbasin in them, or with a washbasin between two outside two bedroom doors. They have bigger kitchens all with a freezer.

Connaught has it's own bar and common room, and is a very lively hall.

As it is quite small (200+ people) it has a great atmosphere and you get to know everyone very well.

South Stoneham Tower

The myth and legend that is Stoneham. Apparently planned to be demolished for years, yet mysteriously first years still seem to be put into this great tower block. Not the best accommodation in the world, but made up with cheap prices. However, hopefully, it will be torn down soon - amidst the rumours of asbestos and rats - so should not be used as accommodation in 2006.

South Hill Hall

Room Types available: Ensuite

No of Rooms: In a block (there are 3 blocks): 8 a flat, 3 flats on a floor, 3 floors.

No of people sharing a kitchen: 8

No of people sharing a toilet: own bathroom

No of people sharing a shower/bath: Own bathroom, although the water pressure isn't great! Bring storage for showering supplies. Bit dark: no natural light, loud extractor fan comes on with the light, stiff shower. Always tuck the shower curtain into the shower tray! Quite a good bathroom.

The Rooms:Plenty of storage in the rooms: Under the bed, huge shelves. Large desk, but not a lot of light, but you get side lights which are very bright. Very warm, unless you have an end room! (And an extra window.) If you find you have an end room, paticullarly on a low floor invest in a heater. Radiators are ok: state of repair varies a lot. Contents: Large notice board, coat hooks, shelves, desk, 2 chairs, bed, 2 cupboards, bedside table, bin. 8 Plug points plus phone line/ethernet port, aerial port. Carpet on one wall. Greeny, brown colour scheme, cream walls. Lots of floor space (More than some places!) Good signal. Plenty of draws in desk. Can hear traffic if facing out onto road, but you can see the bus stop! Louder if facing courtyard, due to drunkards, but nicer view.

The Kitchens: Larger than most, but can get cramped around meal times. Two sinks. Cleaner 4 days a week (They won't do the washing up though!). Lots of light in hallways. Microwave, two hobs one oven. Not enough cupboard/fridge/freezer space.

Let types: In Block A, only a 30 week let (Have to move out for Easter), Else 39 week.

Room Types available: Self Catered. Enhanced (4ft bed + washbasin) and en suite

No of Rooms: Media:STP60968.JPG , Media:STP60967.JPG , Media:STP60969.JPG , Media:STP60970.JPG One of the photos is quite dark, but as you can see the room atually has a really large window and is never dark (mine always catches the afternoon sun)- its just the picture.

No of people sharing a kitchen: 6 people at Enhanced Media:STP60971.JPG- to the left of the picture around the corner is the fridge and freezer , Media:STP60972.JPG- a shot to show u the kind of size of the kitchen , Media:STP60973.JPG- the kitchen table (excuse all the washing up!). Because of the way the building is laid out, in fact every other kitchen is slightly smaller. But its still a good size- our kitchen is massive as its only for 6 people who inevitably will be cooking at different times anyway. Even a decent size to have a party in!

No of people sharing a toilet: 2 bathrooms between 6 people. showers are huge- we fitted 10 people into ours!

No of people sharing a shower/bath: 2 bathrooms containing sink, toilet and shower between 6 people. Media:STP60974.JPG- doesn't really show you quite how big the shower is, but it goes all the way back in level with the wall above/behind the toilet. Like I said- we squeeze 10 people in.

Aubrey

How to describe Aubrey house... Well, imagine heaven, then fill it with cheap drinks. Aubrey house has about 200 people in it so there's a real sense of community. As it's part-catered the kitchens are rubbish (4 hobs to about 16 people. Hint: for weekends get takeaways and microwavable stuff if you can afford it) but the actual food they serve is quite nice. Aubrey house has a JCR with a table tennis table, a 3/4 size snooker table (with pool balls, snooker balls and scoreboard) and a telly. We're 5 minutes walk to Avenue campus and 10 minutes walk from Highfield campus, which makes us the closest halls to either (crawling out of bed and straight into lectures is a great plus).

There's also a bar in the first floor. It's tiny but you can take your drinks all over Highfield Halls, and it's ultra cheap. £1.20 a pint during Happy Hour. If you want to go upmarket there's a pub around the corner as well as a corner shop. There are also good public transport connections. If you're too damn lazy to walk to Highfield campus to get a bus there's a bus stop which is 2 minutes walk away which the U2 stops at.

We're also right next to Southampton Common (like, the across the road kind of 'next to')

A couple of the only downsides is there's only 2 washers and 2 driers. For God's sake don't try and get your washing done on a weekend. And because everybody's so sociable you WILL catch fresher's flu when you arrive. Bring paracetamol and Lemsip.

Room Types available: Catered. Basic + washbasin, Standard + washbasin and en suite

No of Rooms: About 200, probably a bit less

With Gateley it is the most convenient hall for getting to town. The bus up to Highfield takes 10 mins and runs 4 to 6 times an hour with the last bus back to Archers Road at half past 11 pm, the safety bus will take care of you after that.

Has small kitchens, and smaller en suites than at Glen Eyre but they are still very comfortable rooms with big desks. The big advantage for me was the TV aerial points in the rooms, I've managed to get Freeview but channel 5 is crap!
