Glamorgan is a university in Wales in the UK. It was formed in 1992 from the Polytechnic of Wales. It's main campus is based in Treforrest a short distance away from Cardiff. Other campuses are in Glyntaff, and the Atrium Campus in Cardiff. There is also Further Education Campus in Merthyr Tydfil which was formerly the Merthyr Tydfil College.

Facilities

Libraries

Acorss the seven sites of the university over 250,000 items are held in the learning resoruce centres. These are at:

  • Treforest Campus - technology/computing, business, languages, humanities, sports, geography, education, careers
  • Glyntaff Campus - law, care sciences
  • Cardiff ATRiuM Campus - art, design, film
  • Merthyr Tydfil College - sports, health and social care, business, computing, construction and education
  • Prince Charles Hospital
  • Princess of Wales Hospital
  • Royal Glamorgan Hospital

The centres will give you lots of access to study spaces - over 800 in total - and most will have networked PCs. The Treforest Campus Centre also has a scanner while both Treforest and Glyntaff have printing facilities.

Opening hours vary. Treforest is the best - open 7 days a week and closing at 11.45pm weekday evenings. Glyntaff is closed Sundays, but remains open until 9pm weekdays. The others are closed all weekend - so make sure you make use during the week. They generally also shut around 5pm too which can make access difficult.

IT and computing

There are over 1600 PCs and Macs on campus. Some of these are in the libraries, but also there are computer labs across the campuses. Printing is available in most places and black and white printing is cheap. But colour and non-A4 printing can get expensive (and is only available in some locations).

Across the university you may be able to connect our own laptop to the network. In some places this will be wireless, others it will be a wired connection. Check out the places for each - also looked for up updates as they plan to extend wireless cover.

Sports

Glamorgan has good sports facilities, though with split campuses, the facilities are spread about. In total, you have access to

  • large sports hall
  • squash courts
  • badminton courts
  • climbing wall
  • weights room/fitness room
  • aerobics studio
  • several sports pitches (three with flood lights)
  • cricket pitch
  • all weather pitch

There are lots of options to take part in sports - there are fitness classes, instructional classes to learn new skills, intra-university games matches and official university teams competing against teams from other unis. So there is something for all people at all levels of sport.

Welfare

There are many ways to get welfare help at Glamorgan. There is the uni run counseling service which can give you lots of help and advice or just somewhere to talk about your problems. For disabled students there is a team who are dedicated to helping you overcome any problems. The students union also run a welfare service who will jump in to help you out with a range of problems from financial to health to personal.

Healthcare

On Treforest Campus there is a health centre. The main focus is a walk in service staffed by a nurse, though there are some regular GP clinics too. However, these are not on all the time and in order to get to see a doctor when you need one it's advisable to register with another local GOP surgery too.

The centre is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and until 4.30pm on a Friday.

Shops

On Treforest campus you have the SU shop which sells basic groceries and snacks. There are also loads of other shops near by where you can do your food. If you want more shops, Cardiff isn't too far away and has a big selection the usual chains. For supermarkets you have two near Treforest which amazingly have free buses to them from campus!

Restaurants

Banks

Transport

The university is close to Treforest Train Station. Around 4 trains an hour run there from Cardiff, so it's easy to get to and from the uni to the big city. Cardiff has great links with the rest of the country, especially London (trains run in to Paddington station).

There are regular buses from both Pontypridd and Cardiff that stop at or near campus.

Careers service

The careers service has an information room which will allow you to read information and investigate careers and career planning. You can also find out specialist information on certain careers and get advice specific to you from careers advisers. If you need help with writing your CV or making an application you can also get that from the service too.

Part-time jobs

You could find jobs in or around the university or in near by Cardiff. The Student's Union also employs over 130 people, so there are many opportunities on campus to earn a little extra money!

Religious facilities

The uni has a Christian based Chaplaincy, though it is open to people of any faith or none. As well as a place for religion, it arranges a number of social activities and lectures that anyone can join. You can also find out information about many different religions. You can also talk to the chaplins about any sort of problems affecting you and ask for help and guidance.

On Treforest Campus, you can find a Islamic prayer room with appropriate washing facilities while regular services are held on campus too (of a Christian focus).

Most other religions either have student groups or local communities in and around the university - information about which can be got from the Chaplains.

Social

Bars, pubs and clubs

There is always something going on at the Students Union and with several venues, there will be something to interest you most of the time - places for quiet drinks and places for bigger nights out. Off campus you have loads of places to choose from like in any location.

Events

Clubs and societies

As well as many sports clubs there there societies for a huge number of interests. These include:

  • Asian
  • Cheerleaders
  • Chiropractic
  • Conservation
  • Debating
  • Hellenic
  • Law
  • LGBT
  • Live Music
  • Pagan
  • Police Sciences
  • Socialist Students
  • WARPS

If there is something you want a society about you can also start up your own!

Accommodation

Glamorgan has two halls on campus and most rooms are self-catering. They are all located close to the other university buildings meaning there is not far to go to lectures and other facilities.

Accommodation policy

Facilities

All rooms come with the ability to connect to the internet at no extra cost. There are laundry rooms near campus halls as well as the laundry shop in the SU. Communal areas are regularly cleaned though you have to tidy and clean your own rooms. Be warned that rooms are regularly inspected for damage, so keep on top of tidiness. In the shared kitchens you will get the following equipment: kettles, microwave ovens, irons and ironing boards. You will have to provide all other equipment you want.

Residences

  • Glamorgan Court
    • En-suite rooms
    • 6 flats to a kitchen and dinning area
    • All self-catering
  • Philip Evans and Philip Squire Halls
    • Wash basins in room
    • Communal showers and toilets
    • Fully equipped kitchens
    • Lounge area with TV in each flat
    • Some rooms are available on a catered basis with meal vouchers for use on campus.

Private sector

In Cardiff itself there are several privately run Halls of residence offering around 470 rooms to Glamorgan students. You will need to contact each separately if you want a place there.

In addition to private halls, there are wide opportunities for private accommodation both around the university and in Cardiff and Pontypridd. Rent is very cheap compared to national averages - averaging around £47 a week per person. The university will assist you in finding a house or room.

Student union

The Students Union has a huge host of facilities on campus. They have a shop, an off licence, laundry and several bars that offer food and drinks. The bars include Smiths - an American style place and Shafts nightclub.
