Where to Study Medicine

From The Student Room

TSR Wiki > University > Choosing a Subject > Medicine > Where to Study Medicine

Medicine is offered at a large number of Universities. Recently there have been several new medical schools opened up meaning more positions are available. Most people study as undergraduates after studying A Levels (or equivalent), normally including chemistry and biology. However a growing number of places are available for postgraduates to come in a do a medicine course as well as pre-med courses for people who have not studied the traditional science A Levels normally expected for a medicine degree. All medical schools in the UK are overseen by the GMC.

Any entrance requirements listed are currently being updated for the 2008/9 application cycle and it's advised that you confirm this information for yourself before making an application.

Pre-medical Entry Programmes

Pre-medical Entry Programmes (sometimes referred to as 'Medicine with Foundation Year' or 'Medicine conversion courses') comprise of the standard 5 year medical course, with an extra 'Foundation year' at the start of the course (bringing the total length of the course to 6 years, not including any time spent intercalating).

Typical pre-medical entry students are those who have taken non-science A-levels, or qualifications which are not considered for entry to standard 5 year programs. Graduates may also apply to these programs, particularly if their degree has little or no scientific content. Students who have taken Chemistry at A-level are generally not allowed to apply for pre-medical courses, although some universities allow those with a Biology A-level to apply.

The foundation year of the course serves to prepare students for entry into a typical medical degree. Programmes may comprise of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths and other subjects, with topics sometimes being related to medicine. In some medical schools a small degree of clinical experience is gained in the foundation year. Successful completion of the foundation year leads to automatic entry to the medical school's standard 5 year program. These courses should not be confused with Access courses - access courses usually do not lead to direct entry into medical school.

Competition for places on these courses is very severe, sometimes harder than typical 5 year courses.

Graduate Entry Programmes

Graduate Entry Programmes (also known as GEPs, GPEPs or simply GEM) are abridged courses (typically 3.5 - 4 years in duration) for people who have already done an undergraduate degree. Some schools specify your first degree should be in a science or healthcare related subject, while others will entertain applications from graduates of any discipline.
