By the sounds of it you are already doing the best things you can to understand the topics. I think it is more a case of how are you using those revision techniques.

You're using effective revision techniques, as long as you hit 3 main areas for each topic: understanding (whether you understand the content), retrieval (if you can remember key equations, practicals + key points) and application (if you're able to apply your knowledge to exam-style questions), you'll do great.

You can use flashcards to test your understanding, then blurting to see if you can retrieve the info and exam questions like from past papers, PMT and MME revise to practice application skills.
