french question

why is it la plage" (to the beach) and not "au la plage", because they both mean "to"?? i searched its a fem and masc thing but i still dont get it, beaches are feminime?? HUH

«au » is used to replace « à le » which is hard on the ear, so you wouldn’t say « to the the » and as you have noticed plage is féminin so « à la plage » and not « au plage » but you would say « au supermarché »
