Currently you need to study and pass the BPC (used to be the BVC) to qualify as a barrister as this is the vocational component of qualifying and there are, to my knowledge, no alternative at this moment in time.
If you are worried about financing such a course, I would look into scholarships from institutions such as ULaw or from the Inns of Court as they can help subsidise the course immensely 🙂
